Changes to winter fuel payments

25 Oct 2024

Tenant news

The winter fuel payment was previously paid to all pensioners to help with energy bills, but this year the payment will only be made to people on low income who receive certain benefits.

This post will explain what’s changing, how much the payments are, how to know if you’re eligible and how we can help you.

How much is the winter fuel payment?

This year, the winter fuel payment totals £200 for those on certain benefits and born between 23 September, 1944, and 22 September, 1958.

For those born before 23 September, 1944, and on certain benefits, it is worth £300.

If you live with someone, and jointly claim benefits, then only one of the couple receives the payment.

Am I eligible for the payment?

You can get a Winter Fuel Payment for Winter 2024 to 2025 if you were born before 23 September 1958.

You must also recieve one of the following:

  • Pension Credit
  • Universal Credit
  • income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
  • income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA)
  • Income Support
  • Child Tax Credit
  • Working Tax Credit

You will be paid automatically if you meet the eligibility criteria, got a payment last winter and your circumstances have not changed.

How can I register for these benefits?
