New homes for families in Cardiff

A new apartment building providing much-needed homes for families experiencing homelessness has officially opened in Cardiff.

Made up of four one-bedroom and 14 two-bedroom apartments, including one accessible apartment, Min y Coed in St Mellons will help address the unprecedented demand for temporary accommodation in the city.

The property is owned by United Welsh, with Cardiff Council managing the scheme and providing support for families.

Victoria Bolton, Director of Development and Regeneration at United Welsh said:

“There is a significant demand for more suitable housing for families in Cardiff, and Min y Coed is a positive step towards meeting this need.

“We are pleased to see this development open and provide a warm and safe place for families to live while they find their next home.”

Cabinet Member for Housing and Communities, Cllr Lynda Thorne, said:

“Cardiff is experiencing a housing emergency – with severe shortages of good quality, affordable homes and an unprecedented increase in the number of households experiencing homelessness. So it’s vital that we work with partners, like United Welsh, to do everything we can to increase the availability of accommodation for families that need it.”

The building was created using a timber frame structure provided by Celtic Offsite, a social enterprise within the United Welsh Group. Celtic Offsite produced the structure complete with fitted insulation, windows, and doors at its factory in Caerphilly, with Hale Construction completing the build on site.
